What is Pure Iodine (IODINE)?

  • Molecular Formula (Pure Iodine (IODINE): I2
  • Molecular Weight: 253.8089 g/mol
  • Chemical Name: Pure Iodine
  • CAS Number: 7553-56-2

Iodine element is the halogen element found after the Chlorine element. It is an element in group 8A. It occurs as an element found in sea water, some rocks and sediments.

It is a substance found in most skin. It was discovered in 1811 by adding sulfuric acid to the remaining liquid while trying to obtain Potassium Chloride from Seaweed.

It is an element with essential properties. It has radioactive and non-radioactive properties.

Other names are as follows;

  • Iodine
  • Molecular Iodine
  • Diiodine
  • Tincture of Iodine
  • Colloidal Iodine
  • Sublimed Iodine
  • Iodine Solution
  • iodine
  • Iodonia Iodide

How is it produced?
Pure Iodine production is obtained by acidifying the salt water in the ocean with sulfuric acid and then by extraction.

In another Iodine production method, Iodine is precipitated by reducing the iodate-containing solutions in the Nitrate deposits in Chile with Sodium Bisulfite. The nitrates here are NaIO3 and Ca (IO3)2. It is purified by the sublimation method during the subsequent production process.

What are its physical and chemical properties?
In physical appearance, it is in the form of purple-black crystals with a metallic luster and a pungent odor. Potassium Permanganate also has a similar color form.

Its melting point is 133.5 °C. Its vapor has a purple color.

Iodine has oxidizing properties in an acidic solution.

It has a solubility of 23 g/100 mlt in Methyl Alcohol. It has a solubility of 157 g/kg in Ethyl Acetate at 25 °C. Its solubility in water is almost negligible.

Its density is 4.93 g/cm³.

What are the Usage Areas of Pure Iodine (IODINE)?
Iodine deficiency is frequently observed in humans. It is the main component of the thyroxine hormone secreted from the thyroid gland in case of iodine deficiency. In case of iodine deficiency, the thyroxine hormone cannot be secreted at sufficient levels and serious health problems occur. Therefore, it is included in pharmaceutical products produced as iodine supplements.
Iodine supplementation is important for growth and mental development. In these applications, it promotes mental development by promoting protein synthesis.

  • It is used to treat some ocular diseases.
  • It is used for skin disinfection and sterilization.
  • Iodoform is used in the treatment of wounds.
  • It is used in the production of antiseptic solutions to prevent foot rot in sheep, cattle and other hoofed animals, such as Quaternary Ammonium Antiseptics. The produced antiseptic solution is applied to areas referred to as foot baths.
  • It is used as a feed additive in the agricultural sector.
  • It is used as a catalyst in the alkylation of aromatic amines.
  • It is used as a microbiocide in drinking and swimming pools.
  • It is used as an iodine supplement in table salt.

What are the factors affecting prices?
The price of Pure Iodine (IODINE) directly depends on the prices of the substances used in its production. In fact, difficulties in production further affect the prices of these products. Among these, the extraction of Seaweed has an important place. Additionally, sulfuric acid prices affect Iodine prices.

Pure Iodine (IODINE) Prices vary depending on usage areas. Recently, with the increase in its use in the medical field, its prices have increased significantly.

Pure Iodine (IODINE) Sales
Chemical substances are packaged in packages determined by international standards. These are sold by bulk method, starting from the lowest packaging to the largest packaging or by tanker. These can be 1 gram packaging, 1 ton big bag packaging, the lowest drum packaging, or they can be sold unpackaged in tankers.
